Things to do in Locorondo? When visiting Locorotondo, don’t miss Villa Garibaldi, Chiesa madre di San Giorgio and Palazzo Morelli!

Wondering what else to do in Locorotondo? We tell you about all the things you have to see and give you the best tips for this beautiful city.

Things to do in Locorotondo

Locorotondo is an incredibly beautiful town with a small old center. This gives a very cozy and pleasant feeling. The city is therefore on the list of the “Borghi piú belli d’Italia.

I would recommend you to visit the old center and get lost in a maze of small streets. Exactly what the city is known for.

This way you will really discover the charm of the city and you will automatically see all the important sights of Locorotondo. Sights you really shouldn’t miss in Locorotondo are the following:

Locorotondo things to do

Villa Garibaldi

Villa Garibaldi is my favorite attraction in Locorotondo. It is a small, but incredibly beautiful park which you need to see! The park is also known as Villa Comunale Giuseppe Garibaldi.

The park looks truly stunning! Wherever that you look around, you see beautiful flowers, plants and trees. Villa Garibaldi is one of the things you really have to do in Locorotondo.

By the way, not only the park itself is beautiful. In fact, from Villa Garibaldi you have a breathtaking view over the Valle d’Itria. Mainly at Belvedere di Locorotondo and Punto Panoramico Locorotondo.

The park and the view is somewhat similar to Villa Comunale in Cisternino. However, I really think Villa Garibaldi is more beautiful!

Chiesa Madre di San Giorgio

The Chiesa Madre di San Giorgio, also called Church of Saint George Martyr in English, is the main cathedral of Locorotondo.

Among a maze of small streets, out of nowhere you find the Chiesa Madre di San Giorgio. The most important and perhaps the most beautiful church in Locorotondo, right in the historic center of the city.

The construction of the Chiesa Madre di San Giorgio began in 1790. However, it took until 1825 before the church was completely finished.

Chiesa Rettoria Madonna della Greca

You will find this beautiful church just outside the circle of the old center of Locorotondo. Nevertheless, it is well worth taking a moment to visit the Chiesa Rettoria Madonna della Greca.

Chiesa Rettoria Madonna della Greca is the oldest church in Locorotondo. Thus, the church was built around the 7th and 8th centuries.

The current facade dates from the 15th century. In fact, in the 15th century the Chiesa Rettoria Madonna della Greca was rebuilt again. This sand-colored church truly shines beautifully in the sun.

Palazzo Morelli

The magnificent Baroque Palazzo Morelli built in 1819, is one of Locorotondo’s most famous landmarks. The palace is known for its unique architecture.

Be sure to check out the entrance and the magnificent facade of Palazzo Morelli. There you will find the Morelli’s family crest. A beautiful elephant with a tower on its back.

You will find Palazzo Morelli hidden among the narrow streets on Via Morelli. Pay special attention to the 2 glittering balconies.

Chiesa di San Rocco Locorotondo

The Chiesa di San Rocco which is also called Santuario di San Rocco can be found close to the Chiesa Rettoria Madonna della Greca. Thus, these 2 churches are less than 100 meters from each other.

The Chiesa di San Rocco was built in 1568. Unfortunately, this church was demolished in 1804, but a new church came back on the same location.

Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II Locorotondo

Piazza Vittorio emanuele II is the main square of Locorotondo and dates back to the 19th century. Once you walk under the Porta Napoli you reach this town square, where you will also find the town hall right away.

It is actually only a very small square, but in my opinion the most pleasant square in Locorotondo. Because of the stores and restaurants, the square is bursting with atmosphere.

At Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II you will find the famous café “Caffe della villa”. Here it is always packed and cozy! The ideal place for a coffee.

Did you know that the main square in Cisternino is also called Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II? That square is also worth a visit!

Belvedere di Locorotondo en Punto Panoramico Locorotondo

These 2 magnificent viewpoints in Locorotondo can be found at Villa Garibaldi.

Due to Locorondo’s higher elevation, you have a beautiful view of the Valle d’Itria, several trulli houses and magnificent olive groves.

Also, take a walk down via the Via Nardelli. In fact, from this street you also have a beautiful view of the Valle d’Itria.

Things to see in Locorotondo?

Locorotondo is built on a hill. The town lies at an altitude of 410 meters. Because of this, you have a beautiful view of the Valle d’Itria almost everywhere on the outskirts of town.

Because of Locorotondo’s higher elevation, you can already see the village from a distance. Walk down the “Via dei Templari” or take the steps just behind Villa Garibaldi. From there you have a beautiful view of the town.

Downstairs you will also find the small church ‘Church of St. Anne’.

What is Locorotondo famous for?

Locorotondo is famous for its circular street plan. In fact, in Latin, the town is also called “Locus Rotundus“. In addition, the rectangular houses are also typical for Locorotondo. These are also called ‘Cummerse’.

Parking in Locorotondo

Cars are not allowed in the old center of Locorotondo. You must therefore park them in the outskirts. Parking lots close to the center are the following:

  • The central parking lot ‘Parcheggio Piazza Antonio Mitrano’
  • Largo Mitrano (free of charge)
  • Viale Olimpia (free of charge)

Market in Locorotondo

Every Friday there is a local market in the old center of Locorotondo. Here you can taste all the local delicacies.

Wine from Locorotondo

The city is known not only for its round streets, but also for the delicious white wine from this area. Thus, Locorotondo is also called “la città del vino bianco”, the city of white wine.

This white wine for which Locorotondo is so famous is called the Locorotondo DOC. Be sure to take a bottle home, because this is one of the most delicious wines you can find in Puglia.

Things to do in Modica

Duomo di San Giorgio Modica

In Modica, the Duomo di San Giorgio is the number one attraction! This cathedral is a must-see when you visit the city! We first climbed the opposite side, from where you have a great view of the Duomo di San Giorgio.

Then we crossed the ‘Corso Umberto‘ again and went to admire the cathedral up close. The Duomo di San Giorgio is actually quite large and to get there you have to climb quite a few steps. However, this is well worth it.

Duomo di San Giorgio

The combination of the steps with the beautiful flowers and behind them the cathedral almost seems like a fairy tale. When we were here, a wedding took place at the cathedral. To marry at this cathedral would be an unforgettable experience!

Castello dei Conti

Unfortunately, there is not much left of the castle and it looks more like a ruin. A ticket costs 3 euros and you pay mostly for the view.

What to see in Modica

Torre dell Orologio Modica

Near Castello dei Conti you will find the bell tower “Torre dell Orologio”. When you visit the city of Modica, you can already see the bell tower shining on top of the hill. In fact, it stands out right away.

The bell tower itself is fairly small, but it does offer a unique view of the city. Climbing to the Torre dell Orologio is definitely one of the best things to do in Modica.

Things to see in Modica

Cava d'Ispica

This is a unique place near Modica, of which you cannot imagine how far back the history goes. In fact, Cava d’Ispica is a cave town believed to have been used in the Middle Ages.

The caves of Cava d’Ispica originated naturally, but were later carved further by the inhabitants. People were also buried in these caves. The tombs are still in good condition today.

Tickets cost €4 for adults and children are free. A good tip is to visit Cava d’Ispica near Modica on the first Sunday of the month. Then the entrance is free.

The caves of Cava d’Ispica are easily seen within 2 hours. Yet you could also make a day trip of it. After all, it is a beautiful nature reserve where you can go hiking.

Modica panorama

In general, there is less to see on the left side of the Corso Umberto. After all, most of the major sights are on the right side of this important street. Still, it is definitely worth exploring the western part of Modica as well. There can find the Belvedere di San Benedetto.

Modica panorama

First you have to make a climb. Here you really wander through the small streets where you climb higher and higher and walk between the houses. It is even difficult to find a direct way up, because you have no overview at all when you walk between the different houses. Also, there is no direct way up. So be sure to use Google Maps if you can’t find the right path.

Once at the top it is worth the little climb and the search. This is because from this side you have a panoramic view of the part of Modica where all the sights are located. A unique view that you should definitely climb up for.

Belvedere Pizzo

Also on the eastern side of Corso Umberto you have a beautiful panoramic view. You have the bell tower located on the eastern side, as well as Belvedere Pizzo. In contrast, Belvedere Pizzo is a lot further to the north than Torre dell Orologio.

The great thing is that because of its northern position, you actually have a panoramic view of both sides of Modica. Simply amazing and one of the best things to do in Modica!

Belvedere pizzo panorama

Parrocchia Madonna delle Grazie Modica

This is probably one of the most beautiful churches in Modica. The Parrocchia Madonna delle Grazie Modica was built in 1627. Unlike most churches and other old buildings, you will find this church in the lower part of Modica.

Are you visiting Modica by train? Then make sure not to miss Parrocchia Madonna delle Grazie Modica. In fact, this church can be found close to the train station.

The church is famous because it houses a painting of Madonna with a child in her arms.

Duomo di San Pietro Apostolo Modica

The most beautiful cathedral in Modica is, of course, the San Giorgio. Yet the slightly smaller version, the “Duomo di San Pietro Apostolo” is just as magnificent.

The Duomo di San Pietro Apostolo dates back as far as 1308. After the earthquake in 1693, the cathedral was completely rebuilt in the Baroque style. Right from the main street you can already see this magnificent cathedral.

Duomo di San Pietro Apostolo Modica

At the Duomo di San Pietro Apostolo you will find 12 disciples. According to the legend, these would watch over Modica.

Chiesa Rupestre di San Nicolò Inferiore

This may be one of the places with a story you only see in movies. By chance, the Chiesa Rupestre di San Nicolò Inferiore was rediscovered in 1987 by a boy kicking a ball inside.

The boy kicked a ball into an abandoned basement and saw some colors on the wall that caught his eye. Later research was done and it turned out to be a church believed to have been built around 1100.

In this old church you find several frescoes from the Byzantine era. For €2.50 you can discover this place full of history.

Things to do in modica sicily

Chiesa di Santa Maria del Soccorso

This church is located directly on the Corso Umberto. Yet you will walk right past the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Soccorso, because the front side of the church is not on the main street.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Soccorso is definitely worth seeing. In fact, the facade of the church is beautiful! Unfortunately, the church has been abandoned and poorly maintained for ages.

Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista Modica

This church is located on the highest part of Modica. When you reach the Cathedral, it is still a bit of a climb to this church. However, is it one of the most beautiful cathedrals that you can see in Modica.

Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista Modica

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista is especially imposing because of the steps in front of the church. Because of the many stairs with the trees on the side, you get a very nice view.

For €2 and climbing quite a few stairs you can go up into the dome. From here you have a beautiful view, where on clear days you could even see Malta.

Santa Maria di Gesu Modica

This sight is a little further away in Modica. In fact, when you get to the Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista, you have to walk quite a bit further to get to the monastery of Santa Maria di Gesu.

The church itself is not very special, but the Gothic monastery that dates from 1478 must be seen. In fact, it is one of the few sights in Modica that survived the terrible earthquake of 1963. Also, the building served as a prison in the 19th century. For €3 you can enter the Santa Maria di Gesu.

Why is Ostuni all white?

The houses in Ostuni are always perfectly white. Every year all residents are obliged to repaint their houses white. Hence the name “La città bianca.

While towns like Martina Franca, Locorotondo and Cisternino are also best known for their white houses, Ostuni is the most famous of the four.

What to do in Martina Franca?

Palazzo Ducale

Palazzo Ducale is a magnificent palace that you will encounter immediately as you walk through the Porta di Santo Stefano. The palace was built in the 16th century by order of Duke Petracone Caracciolo and is one of the things you have to see in Martina Franca.

Palazzo Ducale di Martina Franca was built on the remains of an ancient castle and is located on the square ‘Piazza Roma‘.

On the inside you will find numerous of beautiful frescoes by Domenico Carella. I highly recommended you to see them! Admission to Palazzo Ducale is also free.

Opening hours:

Porta di Santo Stefano

Martina Franca has 4 city gates, of which the Porta di Santo Stefano located at Piazza XX Settembre is the most famous. The Porta di Santo Stefano dates from the 15th century and is built entirely in the Baroque style.

The city gate is bursting with beautiful decorations and one of the things you have to see in Martina Franca.

Unfortunately, this beautiful city gate was destroyed and the Porta di Santo Stefano was rebuilt in 1764. Once you pass under the gate you will arrive at Palazzo Ducale and Piazza Roma.

Basilica di San Martino

This cathedral is the main attraction of Martina Franca and dedicated to the patron saint of the city. The Basilica di San Martino is incredibly large and imposing situated on a beautiful staircase.

The Basilica di San Martino was built from 1747 to 1785 and has been on the World Heritage List since 2002.

The cathedral was built in the Barocco Martuinese style, which is typical for Martina Franca. The beautiful Cattedrale San Martino is located at Piazza Plebiscito.

Inside you can admire the main marble altar from 1773. In addition, you will find the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament and the crib of Stefano da Putignano.

Piazza Maria Immacolata

Are you looking for the vibrant center? Then Piazza Maria Immacolata is the place to be! This is the most beautiful and atmospheric square in Marina Franca. You will recognize the square by its round shape with beautiful columns.

The small square is bursting with restaurants. From Piazza Maria Immacolata you look out on the magnificent Basilica di San Martino.

Martina Franca Italy

Church of Saint Anthony of Padua

Other things to do in Martina Franca? Visit the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua, also called Parrocchia Sant’Antonio Da Padova in Italian. It is dedicated to Saint Santo Stefano, just like the city gate Porta di Santo Stefano.

You will find this beautiful church right next to Villa Garibaldi. The Church of Saint Anthony of Padua was built in the 15th century. However, in 1835 the facade of the church was renewed in the neoclassical style.

In front of the church you will find a nice little square called Piazza Sant’Antonio.

Martina Franca streets

Villa Garibaldi

Villa Garibaldi feels like a delightful oasis. In fact, nowhere in Martina Franca you will find any greenery in the old historic center.

The park Villa Garibaldi is well maintained and looks clean. A great place to relax, especially in the hot summers. Take a seat on one of the benches or go for a short walk.

Chiesa Parrocchiale della Madonna del Carmine

A beautiful church not to be missed, just outside the historic center of Martina Franca. The Chiesa Parrocchiale della Madonna del Carmine is completely in the Baroque style and the construction started in 1730. It took until 1758 before the church was completely finished.

Along this church you will also find a nice park ‘Giardini Villa Madonna del Carmine‘.

Piazza Roma

You will find this cozy square right when you walk through the Porta di Santo Stefano. It’s a cute square with a small park in the middle with a beautiful fountain ‘Fontana dei Delfini‘.

At Piazza Roma you will find some nice coffee shops such as ‘Arcadia Tap Bar‘ and ‘Superbar Carriero‘. Furthermore, from here you have a nice view on Piazza Ducale.

What to see in Martina Franca?

Of course, the Valle d’Itria is known for its many white towns (città bianche). Martina Franca belongs to them as well. Particularly, because of the whitewashed La Lama district.

Martina Franca was one of the towns that I was’nt looking forward to. After doing some reading on the Internet, I thought it was one of the smaller and less interesting towns.

Martina Franca Puglia

For me, Martina Franca was really a surprise in a positive sense. It is an incredibly nice town where you can easily enjoy yourself for 3 hours.

I expected Martina Franca to be smaller than Ostuni and Locorotondo, but Martina Franca turned out to have a pretty big center.

Martina Franca things to do

What is the history of Martina Franca?

The city of Martina Franca is located in the Tarente region and was founded in the 13th century by a prince of Tarente. However, it was not until the 18th century that Martina Franca really flourished as an important commercial town. Thus, many of the important buildings also come from the 18th century.

Martina Franca old town

Martina Franca has 50,000 inhabitants and used to have a city wall that completely surrounded the city. Unfortunately, very little of this city wall remains today.

Indeed, today you can only see the 4 city gates, of which the Porta di Santo Stefano is the most famous.

Martina Franca what to do

How did Martina Franca get its name?

Martina Franca used to be called San Martino, in reference to the town’s patron saint. However, around the 14th century there were many attacks by the Turks.

San Martino, with its city walls that surrounded all of the city, provided a safe haven for residents from nearby.

The Spanish ruler Philip I therefore decided to add “Franca” which stands for “safe place” to the city name San Martino in 1310.

What to do in Gallipoli? Gallipoli is bursting with things to do and see. For example, main sights are the Cathédrale de Gallipoli, Fontana Greca and Castello di Gallipoli.

Wondering what else you should do in Gallipoli? Read on quickly for all our tips and things to do in Gallipoli.

Things to do in Gallipoli

Gallipoli is a beautiful old town full of history. The old part of Gallipoli is an island still connected by bridge to the new part.

Walk along ‘Corso Roma’ to the old part. There you will first see Fontana Greca and Castello di Gallipoli.

Then continue walking through all the narrow and cozy streets. This way you’ll get right to the other sights like the Cathédrale de Gallipoli and the Chiesa Rettoria Santa Maria Della Purità.

Other attractions in Gallipoli are the following:

What to do in Gallipoli?

Cathédrale de Gallipoli

The Basilica Cattedrale di Sant’Agata is the most beautiful and important cathedral in Gallipoli.

Construction of this Baroque cathedral, made of the local stone Carparo, began in 1629. It took until 1696 for the construction to be completed.

The Cathédrale de Gallipoli reminds you of the beautiful Baroque architecture in Lecce and is one of the fine examples of Baroque in Salento.

The Cattedrale di Sant’Agata stands on the remains of a church formerly dedicated to St. John Chrysostom and later in 1,126 to St. Agatha, the patron saint of the village.

Unfortunately, this old church was destroyed and it was necessary to build the new Cathédrale de Gallipoli. At night, the Cattedrale di Sant’Agata looks beautifully illuminated.

About 75 years ago, the Cathedral of Gallipoli was elevated to “basilica” by Pope Pius XII, giving it an even more important status.

Be sure to go inside as well! I found it a magnificent church with many beautiful paintings and frescoes by local artist ‘Giovanni Andrea Coppola’. Entrance is free.

Fontana Greca

Fontana Greca is also called the oldest fountain in Italy!

In fact, the fountain located on the square Piazza Aldo Moro, dates back to the 3rd century.

At least, that’s what we thought. In fact, thorough research has shown that the Fontana Greca was created during the Renaissance. To this day, the year of contruction is still unknown.

Although the fountain may not be that old, it is still worth visiting because of how beautiful Fontana Greca looks! For instance, there are some beautiful Greek myths depicted on the fountain. You can see 3 stories of the 3 Greek mythological figures Salmace, Dirce and Biblide.

The Fontana Greca is very imposing at 5 meters high. You will find the fountain just outside the old center of Gallipoli. Around 1560 the fountain was moved to this new spot.

Castello di Gallipoli

One of the things you should definitely do in Gallipoli?

Go to Castello di Gallipoli! This magnificent castle comes from the 14th century and was expanded over the years. Among other things, the Aragonese built a fifth tower in 16th century.

These towers used to protect the city from attacks from the sea. But today the castle is used for events. For example, in the summer, one of the towers of Castello di Gallipoli is used as a cinema where you can watch a movie.

The fortress in Gallipoli is still in good condition and gives a unique view of the city and the sea that surrounds Castello di Gallipoli.

Tickets for Castello di Gallipoli:

Adults: €7,-
Children: €4.

An optional audio tour costs €3.

Chiesa di Santa Teresa

This sight is located in the old town of Gallipoli, next to the Carmelite Monastery. The Chiesa di Santa Teresa is somewhat less noticeable than the Cathédrale de Gallipoli.

Construction of the Chiesa di Santa Teresa began in 1687. Yet it took until 1690 for this church to be completely finished.

Market in Gallipoli

Every day between 6:00 and 9:00 in the morning you will find a fish market in Gallipoli. Here you can find really tasty fish, just fresh from the sea.

While you buy the fish, you will see some fishermen emptying their nets or preparing the fresh fish. Even without eating fish, it is worth visiting the market in Gallipoli. Furthermore, you’ll see the port, full of cute blue fishing boats.

Gallipoli City Wall

Another sight not to miss in Gallipoli (and almost impossible to miss), is the city wall. The city wall that surrounds the entire city dates back to the 15th century.

The city wall served to protect Gallipoli from enemy attacks. In the 19th century, the wall was torn down to the states level.

The wall is still in good condition and offers a beautiful view over the sea. Especially, from the beach ‘Spiaggia della Purità‘, where you will have an incredible view.

Chiesa Rettoria Santa Maria Della Purità

This beautiful church build in 1660 can be found almost directly on the beach ‘Spiaggia della Purità‘. The combination of the church with the beautiful view of the beach and sea, make this sight one of the thing you must see in Gallipoli.

From the outside, the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Purità is not the most beautiful church. What really matters here is the inside! Also named by many the most beautiful church in Gallipoli.

A real surprise you will find when you walk into the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Purità. Inside the church you will find beautiful frescoes and decorations. Lastly, don’t forget to admire the unique floor.

Spiaggia della Purità

Gallipoli has a beautiful city beach, right in the historic center. Spiaggia della Purità is clean, there is plenty of space to lie down and the water is crystal clear.

It is a free sandy beach, about 200 to 300 meters wide. When we were there, there was plenty of space to lie down. During busier periods, you may have to be on time.

You can rent umbrellas and a beach bed for about €5 each.

Porto di Gallipoli

Also be sure to check out the port of Gallipoli. In the port you will find cute authentic blue boats and see some fishermen bringing the fresh catch on shore.

Porto di Gallipoli can be found just before you enter the old town. Near the castle ‘Castello di Gallipoli’.

Does Gallipoli have nice beaches?

Other nice beaches near Gallipoli that are worth visiting are the following:

  • Punta della Suina
  • Torre Lapillo
  • Porto Cesareo
  • Punta prosciutto

Why is Gallipoli so famous?

When you say Gallipoli, you say olive oil and oil presses. The city has traditionally been known for its oil presses. For example, in Gallipoli you will find no less than 35 underground oil presses, some of which have been excavated. Gallipoli was so important that in the 17th century it had one of the largest olive oil productions in Italy.

Would you like to visit an underground chamber where olive oil was produced? Then go to Frantoio Ipogeo. There you can book a tour where you get to visit the underground chambers and will be informed about the history of olive oil in Gallipoli.

Food in Gallipoli

In Gallipoli you will find several delicacies you must try! For example, Gallipoli is known as the city of fish, with fresh sea urchins being the specialty.

Other dishes worth trying are marinated fish with saffron and Gallipolina fish soup.

What to see around Gallipoli?

In the surroundings of Gallipoli there are plenty of things to do. For example, you will find several beautiful beaches but also some nice villages such as Nardò and Galatone.

Gallipoli parking

You cannot enter the old center of Gallipoli by car. So make sure you park it in the new part of town.

We parked our car at Parcheggio cimitero. Then you can walk along Corso Roma to the old center. By doing this, you can also see the sights of the new part of Gallipoli.

Where to eat in Catania | Top 5 best restaurants Catania

We spent 10 days in Catania ourselves. This seemed long in advance, but the evening life in Catania is so vibrant that the days will fly by! There were so many good restaurants in Catania that it is possible to eat at a nice place every night. For dinner in catania, the following made our list of the best restaurants in Catania.

There are several nice places to eat and drink in Catania, but for the best restaurants and a great atmosphere, you have to go to Via Santa Filomena. This narrow street has cute lights and there are restaurants on both sides of the street where everyone sits at a table outside. This is the street where you have to be for dinner in Catania! Of the 5 times we went out for dinner, 4 times we ended up in Via Santa Filomena.

Where to eat in Catania

Alè Ristorante Pizzeria

At Alè Ristorante Pizzeria, the choice is simple. This is one of the places in Catania to eat inside! Alè has a chic atmosphere, but what makes the restaurant special is the roof which can be opened. This allows you to eat beautifully under the starry sky. Definitely a unique experience. The food at Alé is also great! A bit more expensive than most other restaurants in Catania. However, the special inside location makes it worth it. The restaurant can of course be found in Via Santa Filomena.

L’Horloge

Besides Alè, you can also find restaurant L’Horloge in Via Santa Filomena. When you sit outside, you have a nice view of the entire street. The menu features delicious dishes with pistachio and different types of gnocchi. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Catania.

FUD Bottega Sicula

Also this third restaurant can be found in the same street. Looking for the best burger in Catania? Then you should definitely go to FUD. Unfortunately, you can’t make a reservation here and it is always busy. However, it is definitely worth waiting a while over here. At FUD you have delicious burgers and loaded fries for a good price. In general, you spend a little less time here than at the other restaurants. Ideal if you have made a day trip and it is already quite late.

Fud Catania

Trattoria la Pentolaccia

This restaurant is located in a hidden place. We happened to find this great place to eat in Catania when we were strolling through some narrow streets during the day. We returned in the evening and the atmosphere was authentically Sicilian and cozy. You can find the Trattoria at a really small square surrounded by buildings. It has so much atmosphere and in my opinion it is one of the best restaurants which is located in a calmer area of Catania. At Trattoria la Pentolaccia you have a delicious house wine, for those who want to enjoy it cheaply.

Scirocco

Do you like fried fish? Tasty calamari for example? Then you really need to go to Scirocco! This restaurant is close to Piazza del Duomo, right by the Mercato della Pescheria. You simply cannot get the fish any fresher than this.

Over here you can get all kinds of fish. We personally chose a cornetto calamari. Where we are used to a cone of chips, they have a cone of calamari over in Catania. It’s always busy at Scirocco, but since everyone leaves quickly, it’s just a matter of time before it’s your turn.

Best granita in Catania

Comis

When looking where to eat in Catania, we also want to advice you one of the perfect places we found for having breakfast.

For a unique Sicilian breakfast, go to Comis on Piazza Vincenzo Bellini square. This is the place to order the best granita in Catania! We can’t imagine having a sorbet for breakfast every morning, but in Sicily it is the most normal thing. Usually you eat the granita together with a brioche. So it’s actually a kind of sandwich with ice cream, where you take one bite of the brioche with a little scoop of the ice cream on top of it. We recommend ordering only 1 granita and 1 brioche here, even if you are with two persons. The granitas are very sweet and filling.

We enjoyed trying it once, but after this one time at Comis we had enough sweets for our entire holiday.

Best bars Catania

Vermut

This is one of the busiest bars in all of Catania. The terrace is super full and it is always pleasant. So make sure you reserve a place here or go to the terrace on time. Vermut can be found in Via Gemellaro. While Via Santa Filomena is the street for the best restaurants in Catania, Via Gemellaro is the street for having a drink.

Città Vecchia

For a nice wine, this is the place to be in Catania! You have a small terrace here where many of the locals sit down to have a drink. The special thing about Città Vecchia is the menu. In fact, this is the waiter! When you ask to see the menu, the waiter says that he himself is the menu. He knows all the drinks on the menu. A unique experience and definitely one of the best bars in Catania.

Prestipino Duomo

Usually the terraces in the main square are tourist attractions, for which you have to pay a hefty price. However, at Prestipino Duomo you will find a cozy terrace on the main square that is always full, and where the prices are actually not that high. When you order a drink, you even get a bowl of chips and several other snacks. So at Prestipino Duomo you don’t have to worry about paying too much, while being able to sit on the bustling main square.

Also, don’t forget to walk inside when you have a drink on the terrace. You will be amazed when you see all the delicious snacks in the display cases over here.

prestipino duomo catania

Prestipino Cafè

This terrace is actually very close to Prestipino Duomo and the prices here are also reasonable. I like Prestipino Duomo better in the evening, but during the day you should sit on the terrace of Prestipino Cafè. Here I ate the most delicious pistachio cannoli in all of Sicily. It may look small, but the cannoli tastes great and will definitely fill your stomach!

Best gelato in Catania

Don Peppinu

Not only has Catania some good restaurants, also for ice cream you are in the right city! Don Peppinu has a wide variety of flavours which all of them are delicious.

In the evening there is always a que in front of Don Peppinu. However, it’s definitly worth the wait!

Catania what to see | Top 10 things to see and do in Catania

Catania is Sicily’s second largest city after Palermo, located on the east coast. Not only Catania itself is beautiful, but the city is also surrounded by lovely towns and villages. There is nothing finer than waking up in this city with a clear blue sky and a magnificent view of Mount Etna. The city is always living and everywhere you see local traditions reflected.

Are you wondering which things to do in Catania and what to see in the area? Then read on quickly. We list all the main attractions of Catania for you, including some amazing tips!

Things to do in Catania

1. Piazza del Duomo

Piazza del Duomo is the central point of Catania. From here you can easily visit Catania’s biggest attractions. In fact, the central square of Catania Via Etnea, Via Crociferi, Mercato della Pescheria, Castello Ursino and the Teatro Romano. At night, the square really comes alive and there are a number of nice bars to have a drink while enjoying some street performers.

However, the real attractions of the square are the Duomo and the magnificent church Chiesa della Badia di Sant’Agata. One of the most beautiful churches you can find in Catania!

Did you know that you can also go up to the top of the Chiesa della Badia di Sant’Agata? For 3 euros you can go up and have a magnificent view of Catania.

2. Castello Ursino

Within 5 minutes you can get from Piazza del Duomo to Castello Ursino. Whereas many castles are often right on the coast or on a mountain, Castello ursino is in the middle of city. The castle is nice to see once, but not the most beautiful castle you will have ever seen. Inside the castle there is a museum and you can visit the old halls of the past.

For a really beautiful castle, go to Aci Castello. This village is located right next to Catania and has one of the most beautiful castles in all of Sicily with stunning views of the coastline and the village.

3. Teatro Romano

Like several cities in Sicily, Catania also has its own Roman theater. This ancient Roman theater dates back to the 2nd century BC and was the place in Catania for theatrical performances and fights between gladiators. Nowadays, many events are hosted in the theater. To see anything of the theater you really need to buy a ticket. Unfortunately, you cannot get a view into the theater from any side outside the theater.

Would you like to visit the theater? A ticket costs €6.00 for adults, and for people of the age 25 or younger it is €3.00. Important tip! Tickets cannot be ordered online and are only available at the theater itself. The opening hours are as follows:

In summer: Monday to Sunday from 09:00 to 19:00 (entrance until 18:30).
In winter: Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00 (entrance until 16:30).

4. Mercato della Pescheria

Among the many things to do in Catania, going to the fish market is one you cannot miss. This tradition has existed for many years and is one of the main attractions in Catania. The fish market is as old as it gets. Despite being very smelly, it is definitely worth walking around the fish market once and perhaps buying something tasty for dinner. Here you can really taste the now authentic Sicilian cues.

The Mercato della Pescheria can be found directly along the Piazza del Duomo if you pass the fountain and take the stairs down. At the market you will find mostly fish stalls downstairs and fruit and vegetable stalls upstairs. In addition, the whole street is filled with a ceiling of umbrellas. One of the must seen places in Catania!

5. Monastero dei Benedettini

This was personally in terms of sightseeing in Catania my favorite! Monastero dei Benedettini is a hidden gem that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the front you will find one of the largest churches in all of Sicily. This one unfortunately just looks like a complete block of concrete, but is still imposing because of its size.

Once you walk through the gate to the monastery, you will see how beautiful it is inside. You can walk through the monastery for free, where you can admire the 2 beautiful gardens from downstairs and upstairs. These gardens are great a place in Catania to relax during a city walk!

6. Via Etnea

Are you on vacation or on a city trip and want to go shopping in Catania? Then the Via Etnea is the place to be! On this big street you will find all the important stores. Apart from the stores, there is plenty of things to do in this street and there are beautiful buildings to see. So wandering down this street is definitely a must.

Walking along this long road that starts from Piazza del Duomo you soon reach Piazza Università. A large square with imposing large buildings. A little further on you will find the beautiful Basilica della Collegiata. About in the middle of Via Etnea, you will have Piazza Stesicoro. Despite being a busy square with lots of cars, you also have beautiful things to see. In fact, there is an old excavated Roman theater and the Chiesa di San Biagio.

When you continue the route again you will pass many stores and at the end you will find the beautiful park Villa Bellini.

7. Via crociferi

Along with the Monastero dei Benedettini, this is one of my favorite sights in Catania. Before going to Catania, I heard everyone talking about this street, where as many as 4 churches can be found within a short distance. And nothing was lied about it. The street is really special and actually directly along Via Etnea. Yet this street is a lot calmer, while right here you can admire the most beautiful churches. So be sure to put Via Crociferi on your list of things to see in Catania.

8. De Etna

When you say Catania, you say Mount Etna. This is what Catania is known for and what has defined the city’s history and past. From the city it is wonderful to admire Mount Etna. No matter where your are, the beautiful Etna vulcano can be seen from all over the city.

In case you would like to visit the Mount Etna, make sure to book your Etna tickets in advance as these can be sold out quite fast. Another tip is to bring some warm clothes with you. On top of Mount Etna it can be pretty cold.

Etna Catania

9. Teatro Massimo Bellini

Located at Piazza Vincenzo Bellini square is the imposing theater Massimom Bellini. Besides the Duomo, this is one of the great other sights of Catania. The theater comes from the 19th century, but still regularly hosts concerts and opera performances.

From the square you have a great view of the Teatro Massimo Bellini. From the outside, the large theater has a distinct bronze color, like almost no other buildings in Catania. Yet the real splendor is found on the inside. The venue is truly magnificent. Should you have the chance to go to a performance at Teatro Massimo Bellini, it is highly recommended!

Parks in Catania

Apart from all the famous sights in Catania, it is of course wonderful to escape from all the hustle and bustle and relax in one of the parks in Catania. Our two favorite parks that you must see in Catania are Villa Bellini and Orto Botanico di Catania.

Villa Bellini

If you want to find peace in the middle of the city and enjoy nature, Villa Bellini is the place to be in Catania. In my opinion, this is the most beautiful park in Catania, where you even feel safe at night.

The park slopes upward, which means that on the higher part you have a beautiful view of the rest of the park. Villa Bellini is beautifully maintained and a green oasis you cannot miss.

Orto Botanico di Catania

If you walk a little further on Via Etnea from Villa Bellini you will reach the botanical garden of Catania. Good to know is that this botanical garden is free to visit. It is not a large botanical garden, but definitely a must see during your city walk.
